I had the honour of attending the launch of the National Anti-Racism Framework at Parramatta Town Hall, an event hosted by the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC). This pivotal gathering highlighted the national commitment to eliminating racism and fostering unity across various sectors.

On behalf of the African Australian Advocacy Centre (AAAC), I sincerely thank Race Discrimination Commissioner Giri Sivaraman and his dedicated team for their exceptional leadership in driving this initiative forward. Commissioner Sivaraman’s powerful message, “Racism divides, but anti-racism connects,” underscores the essence of this framework—a collective vision of unity that bridges government, business, community, and civil society groups.

Key Recommendations from the National Anti-Racism Framework

The framework lays out 63 comprehensive recommendations to help address and combat systemic racism, including:

  1. Establishing a National Anti-Racism Taskforce: This task force will oversee the effective implementation of the framework, ensuring that progress is monitored and sustained.
  2. Creating 5-Year Implementation Plans: These plans will drive structured change, explicitly focusing on First Nations people to address unique challenges and foster reconciliation.
  3. Increasing Racial Literacy and Cultural Safety: Emphasising the importance of understanding “racism” and its impact, the framework aims to enhance societal awareness and sensitivity.

A Call for Collective Action

The framework is a call to action for government bodies, businesses, and civil society to create a future free from racism. As we continue to advocate for social justice, the AAAC remains committed to fostering collaboration, advocating for equitable opportunities, and ensuring that marginalised voices are heard.

The Role of the African Australian Advocacy Centre

At the AAAC, our mission aligns seamlessly with the objectives of the National Anti-Racism Framework. We believe meaningful change requires persistent advocacy, cross-sector partnerships, and proactive engagement with diverse communities. The framework reinforces our dedication to building a more inclusive Australia where everyone, regardless of their background, has the chance to thrive.
